Expert Measures and Units

Expert Measures is the application-level workspace for finding and maintaining Measures and Units of Measurement used by numeric attributes.

A Measure describes what is measured, such as length, mass, or pressure. A Unit of Measurement is a concrete scale or notation used for that measure, such as millimetre, kilogram, or bar. UCUM codes provide interoperable unit notation where configured.

Search and filters

  • Search by measure name, unit name, or UCUM code.
  • Sort by Name or Units of Measurement.
  • Use Category use to show all measures, only those used by categories, or those not used by categories.
  • Choose ascending or descending order.

Create and maintain records

Users with the required management role see New measure and New unit actions. A unit belongs to a compatible measure; create or select the measure before defining its units.

Before adding a record:

  1. Search for the measure and expected unit names.
  2. Search by UCUM code when one is known.
  3. Confirm that the new unit belongs to the correct measure.
  4. Avoid alternate spellings that duplicate an existing standardized record.

Changes to shared measures or units can affect numeric Attribute definitions and category templates. Review existing use before changing semantics or compatibility.

If export is available, queue an export of selected measures or the applied result set.

When the export is ready, use Download export in the notification or open Expert -> Exports. Expert Measures export results are not stored under the selected company workspace.

Common mistakes

  • Do not create one Measure per unit; a measure can have several compatible units.
  • Do not assign a unit from an incompatible measure to a numeric attribute.
  • A display label and a UCUM code serve different purposes; keep both accurate.
  • “Not for categories” describes current category use, not whether a measure is intrinsically invalid.
